Flood Damage in Texas? Here’s How to Get FEMA Money for Repairs and Living Costs

Flooding across Texas has left many families facing damaged homes, lost belongings, and urgent financial stress. The federal government has now activated FEMA assistance to help Texans recover and rebuild.
If you live in Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Kerr County, or other declared areas, here is a clear guide to get the help you may qualify for.
What FEMA Assistance Covers
-
Temporary housing if your home is unsafe
-
Repairs for your home to make it safe and livable
-
Replacement of essential personal property
-
Disaster-related medical, dental, and funeral costs
-
Disaster unemployment assistance if you lost work
-
Legal services related to the disaster
FEMA assistance is designed to help with essential needs that are not covered by insurance.
Step 1: Document the Damage
Before you apply, take photos and videos of your damaged home and items.
Write down everything that was damaged or lost. Keep receipts for any emergency repairs or related expenses.
Step 2: Apply for FEMA Assistance
There are three ways you can apply for FEMA aid:
-
Online: Visit DisasterAssistance.gov
-
By phone: Call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 between 7 AM and 10 PM CST
- Social Security number
- Address of the damaged home
- A description of the damage
- Insurance details if you have coverage
- A phone number and email address where you can be reached
Step 3: Prepare for Inspection
After you apply, FEMA may schedule an inspection to confirm the damage.
Be ready to walk an inspector through the affected areas or provide photos and video if a remote inspection is scheduled.
Keep your contact information updated to avoid delays.
Step 4: Track Your Application
You can track your status online or through the FEMA app.
Once approved, you will receive a notice explaining how much assistance you will get and how it will be delivered, typically by direct deposit or check.
Other Support You Can Access
In addition to individual assistance, FEMA has approved public assistance for emergency repairs and rebuilding public facilities in Kerr County.
You may also qualify for low-interest disaster loans through the SBA to help with repair costs or to replace damaged property. Visit sba.gov for details.
Who Is Eligible for FEMA Assistance
You may qualify if:
-
You are a U.S. citizen or legal resident
-
Your main home is in a declared disaster area
